Wine notes: 2005 Vincent Girardin Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru “Les Vergelesses”
A pinot noir that tasted like a Cabernet Sauvignon blend. I think it is an expectation management problem. You don’t open a bottle of pinot expecting it to taste like Cab. Tannins are noticeable but not raw on the palate – very rich blackberry. Wasn’t thrilled.
KLWine Notes: 89 points Wine Spectator: “An animal-tinged version, yet with dark, rich, black cherry and blackberry flavors. Packed with fruit. Plenty of tannins on the finish. This is smokey on the palate, with rich black fruit and a prominent thread of minerality at its core. This is no surprise, since this vineyard, on the border with Pernand is known for its shallow topsoils and limestone subsoil. It is muscular and masculine.
